Samena Squares Newsletter #16

Dear Friends,

Welcome to seven new dance friends! Some were friends from the Dudes & Dolls who just graduated this week. They wanted some more floor time on calls that they had learned in the last few weeks. Those are exactly the calls that we are learning at this time. A perfect match! Other new friends came from different places. All are welcome! And I always say, the more the merrier!

We started learning Cast Off 3/4, which involves fractions. Up to this point we have also been using fractions but only halves (1/2) and quarters (1/4).
Examples:
Trades (ALL trades) are dancers trading places AND changing facing direction by 180° or half
Swing Thru is two Trades, those who can by the right hand (1/2) then those who can by the left hand (1/2) [Gentle reminder: if you are not involved with the turning Trading action, stand still]
Runs are one dancer (the Runner) moving forward and around the other dancer (the Runee) 180° or half way around. The Runee DOES NOT CHANGE FACING DIRECTON. They just slide into the empty space left by the Runner.
Touch a Quarter is a change of facing direction by 90° or one quarter

Now we have added three quarters (3/4). You will have to figure out for yourself what will help you know how far to go. I gave several examples in class that I know other dancers use: compass directions, a clock, counting walls (hint: the wall you are facing is 0), or counting 5 steps. Another one that I have heard of is – a Trade or turn 1/2 and a 1/4 more. Everyone has his or her own method. Figure yours out because there is going to be more with Cast Off 3/4 next week!

Our last class and graduation party will be Thursday, March 14! Don’t miss it!

More dance dates have been added to the Dance Dates section below. Please mark them on your calendar and make plans to come.

Once again we were missing Susanne. She is still congested and coughing with allergies. Hopefully, she will be back with us next week. I would still like a square to plan stay after for 15-20 minutes for Susanne to practice.

Have a great week!

Happy dancing,
Susan
