Samena Squares Newsletter #19

Dear Friends,

Well, I hope that this finds you safe and warm and snug in your homes on this snowy night. Class was cancelled last week due to snow and ice. Reports were that the garbage truck got stuck in the driveway. Oops!

At this point in time, almost 8 p.m. on Sunday, it’s not looking too good for this week either. My Monday group, Cascade Crossfires, cancelled workshops for tomorrow night. Watch your email this week as we see what develops weather wise. As always be safe.

So with that being said, I am going to take this opportunity to try an experiment. In addition to the calls that we are learning there are two rules. I am going to explain one of them later in this newsletter and give you some examples. We will see if everyone can learn, at least, one thing by reading. I know that there are lots of different learning styles and reading may not be your preferred one. Let’s give it a try anyway.

Stay warm! Stay safe! See you soon!

Happy dancing,
Susan

Week#19
No moves taught as class was cancelled due to snow.

Facing Couples Rule
A few specific calls that are defined to start from an OCEAN WAVE are also proper starting from Facing Couples. The timing of the call does not change.

The one that we know at this point is Swing Thru. In this case, dancers first step into a momentary Right- Hand Ocean Wave and complete the call. In the next weeks we will be learning other calls that fall under this rule too. I will be sure to point them out to you.

What this means is that if the Heads SQUARE THRU, for example, they will be facing their Corner. Instead of saying, STEP TO A WAVE, SWING THRU, the caller will only say SWING THRU. The dancers will have to step to a wave first before starting and then completing the call.

Now if you are confused about what STEP TO A WAVE means. You touch right hands with the person you are facing and if you are in the center of the formation you touch left hands with the other center.

For those of you who use Taminations, the Facing Couples Rule is under Basic 2.
