Samena Squares Newsletter #14

Dear Friends,

Good dancing Thursday night! Keep it up! A HUGE THANK YOU to all the club members who come to help out. Your presence is appreciated.

One of the things that we talked about Thursday night was the Facing Couple Rule and the Ocean Wave Rule. (For those of you who use Taminations, these rules are listed on the Basic 2 list as well as below.)

Last week we decided that our last night of class will be Thursday, March 8. Eight short weeks away. We will be learning about 3 calls a week with the goal of being done with initial learning by the end of February. That way we will have a couple of weeks to dance and get more floor time with the last calls that we will learn.

The question always comes up – what is next after class? Well, I will tell you. There will be workshops right here on Thursday nights. The workshops will start on March 15 and continue until May 24. The cost is $6/person/per night. Plan to come as often as you can. In the workshops, we will build up our floor time for the last calls that we learned as well as some square dance games and other fun dancing.

The other thing that comes next is that you will be able to attend ALL club dances. After class is finished you can attend any advertised Basic or Mainstream dance. We will talk more about this in the coming weeks.

Dates to note:
Friday, February 2, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m., First Friday Fun Fest hosted by the Whirlybirds with Dave Harry, caller. The hall is The Hayloft, 15320 35th Ave W, Lynnwood. Cost is $7/person.

Week #14
33. Slip The Clutch: In a Thar Star, the Centers keep their star and let go of the Outsides and start walking forward. The Outsides let go of the Centers and continue walking forward. Walk forward the designated distance to complete the next command. SLIP THE CLUTCH – 2 steps.

61. Slide Thru: With the dancer you are facing pass thru, Boys turn 1/4 right and Girls turn 1/4 left. ALWAYS! If a Boy is facing a Girl they end up as partners side by side. If a Boy is facing a Boy they end up holding right hands in a mini-wave. If a Girl is facing a Girl they end up holding left hands in a mini-wave. SLIDE THRU (box of 4 dancers) – 4 steps.

Facing Couples Rule
A few specific calls that are defined to start from an OCEAN WAVE are also proper starting from Facing Couples. The timing of the call does not change.

The one that we know at this point is Swing Thru. In this case, dancers first step into a momentary Right- Hand Ocean Wave and complete the call. In a few weeks we will be learning other calls that fall under this rule too. I will be sure to point them out to you.

Ocean Wave Rule
Some calls that are defined to start from FACING COUPLES are also proper starting from a Right-Hand Ocean Wave. Examples include Right And Left Thru and Square Thru. In these cases, the dancers have already stepped forward toward the facing dancer and are ready to complete the remaining action of the directed call.
